The key to mastering water cooler conversations and small talk

Water cooler conversations - or small talk as it it often called, is something we have to deal with on the daily. Just by living life we are going to have to meet people and strangers and its impossible to avoid the small talk that follows. It sucks: it can be dreadfully disingenous, super awkward and half the time you don't even want to be there.

As an intern, small talk will 100% occur whether you like it or not. You'll be out and about networking as an intern, working on projects and just generally will have to speak with people.

But what if I told you that you can become a super star intern without having to resort small talk?

It's simple really:

Treat everyone like your best friend.

Body Language and why it matters to interns

Even though I run a sick-ass internship blog, I admit it that I am not always the cool guy I want to be.

My friends (I swear I have some) can all attest that I often say things which can be highly questionable and socially innappropriate.

But what if it didn't matter what I said anyway?

Networking as an intern when you are afraid of people and talking

Networking as an intern when you are afraid of people and talking is tough.

First and foremost, to network is literally to 'interact with other people to exchange information and develop contacts, especially to further one's career."

So if you want to network with people a big step (arguably essential) is actually being able to talk to people.

So what do you do when you're an intern embarking into your career and you're afraid of both talking and people? How do you make those important connections?

You're probably really worried, and I get your concerns. Furthermore I'm not saying it's going to be easy since you fail most of the criteria from the get-go (you awkward fella)

But let's at least get you a fighting chance in reaching your super star intern aspirations.

What I Wish I Knew During My Internship

Ohhhhhh hindsight. There is a saying you are probably all too familiar with which is that in hindsight everything is 20/20. Idioms are often misused or overused, but this one is a goodie and pretty easy to understand.

What this means of course, is that whenever you look back at a situation it is in focus, because you lived through it and know what has resulted. Pretty insightful, right?

Nonetheless, upon reflection on some of my internships I am filled with both a combination of pain and bewilderment on my thoughts and actions. There were good parts of course (I am a super star intern lad), but I would be lying if there were not a couple things I would do differently if I had a chance to roll back the time and do them again.

Here is what I wish I knew during my internship and what I may have changed:

Learn to be okay with the horrible manager you have on your internship

My best advice for people who have a truly horrible manager is to leave your job and get another.

I cannot emphasise the importance of your own happiness and development you get out of your work - if you are having a terrible time, you aren't learning much, then you need to get the fwark out of your role.

But I get it... you are an intern. Sometimes to take that first step you gotta do some things you might not necesarily enjoy. Besides being able to cope with colleagues you may not necesarily like that much is kind of part of every career!

Still if you want to be a super star intern, if you learn to be okay with the horrible manager you have on your internship- you'll be killing it.

It's all about having a sense of appreciation - here are some reasons to be thankful you have a terrible boss:

How to Handshake as an intern

I have shaken many' a hand in my time as an intern. Big hands, small hands, clammy hands, hands which after shaking that make you immediately think "man those were some terrible hands" and today I want to go over a couple things in the art of proper handshaking.

To begin with when learning how to handshake as an intern its important to remember that interns shake hands just like everybody else. Allow me to illustrate:

Here are a picture of some hands. Looks like yours right???

But even though we all have the same hands, handshakes were not all born equal. The best hand shakes leave you feeling a powerful connection with the recipient which last to the end of time. For example the Wright brothers hated each other... then they shook hands... and boom the plane was made.

Follow the below steps in order to really handshake like a super star:
